Project “Adaptive low-power traffic lights control with advanced detection and public transport prioritization in Balti”, funded by the Polish Challenge Fund in the Republic of Moldova, aims at implementing modern adaptive traffic control system that continuously adapts to actual traffic level detected by cameras with advanced data analytics combined with public transport priority at first selected intersection in Balti. It will also include new low-power and low-consumption traffic lights and up-to-date traffic control software.

As a pilot project it will serve for training of involved collaborators of the Balti Municipality and its municipal organization DRCD for the use of modern traffic control technologies and for evaluating the impact that the implementation of modern traffic technologies on larger scale would have in Balti.

The project will set up a basis for modern urban traffic control in Balti allowing to add further functionalities in the future such as priority of emergency vehicles at intersections and to scale up.

In particular, it will further enhance rapidity and reliability of public transport, through implementation of public transport priority at the intersection thus making it more attractive for passengers.

“Modern adaptive low-power and low-consumption traffic lights control system with traffic signal plans that continuously adapt to detected actual traffic level using advanced camera detection in combination with public transport priority at intersection is not only a complete novelty in the Republic of Moldova, but combination of all these innovative features at one intersection is according to our knowledge even unique in global context” – announced Mr. Tomasz Górka, Chief Operating Officer of Spinnea Sp. z o.o.

Implementation of adaptive traffic control and subsequent improvement of traffic conditions will also have numerous positive impacts for inhabitants, visitors and businesses of Balti. It will reduce air and noise pollution, lower energy and fuel consumption, reduce the time people would lose in traffic jams and lower their stress, increase rapidity of public transport, improve road security and safety and reduce possibility of accidents. In particular, it will further enhance rapidity and reliability of public transport through implementation of public transport priority at the intersection thus making it more attractive for passengers.

“Balti City Hall is looking forward to this cooperation and fully supports the initiative of Polish innovation systems for the update of traffic on one of the main locations in Balti, preselected for the realization of this project.” – stated Mr. Nicolai Grigorisin, Mayor of Balti.

The project “Adaptive low-power traffic lights control with advanced detection and public transport prioritization in Balti” is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Polish Challenge Fund, with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
